In 1990, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and Marine Port and General Workers Union's claim for improved pensions for 18 dockers. The recommendation was signed on 26 April 1990. The dockers' pensionable service with B & I Line began in 1984, although they had earlier worked on the Dublin docks. The unions sought pension provision reflecting that earlier service. The Court concluded that B & I Line had no obligation to fund service before 1984, having regard to the workers' previous employment and the options available when it ended.
