In 1989, the Labour Court recommended a consolidated rate for weekend and rest-day overtime claimed for 23 shift workers at Nypro Limited. The recommendation was signed on 4 October 1989. The Federated Workers' Union Of Ireland sought the same overtime basis as for weekday work, arguing that the earlier reason for separate weekend treatment no longer applied after four-shift working began. Nypro Limited had rejected the claim and said any change depended on the company's competitive position. The Court recommended that shift premium be paid for all overtime, alongside 1.5 or 2 times basic pay. From 1 January 1992, it recommended that overtime be paid at the consolidated rate: basic pay plus shift premium multiplied by 1.5 or 2.
