In 1989, the Labour Court recommended that Trinity College Dublin continue paying its library guards the consolidated rate for non-rostered overtime until the College and workers negotiated a change to their employment terms. The Federated Workers' Union Of Ireland said the higher rate had been paid under a local arrangement since 1980. The College said its policy provided for the basic rate on non-rostered overtime. The Court found that the higher payment was sufficiently established by custom and practice to be a valid employment condition. The recommendation was signed on 23 August 1989.
