The Labour Court did not recommend concession of the Amalgamated Engineering Union and National Engineering and Electrical Trade Union's claim for a once-off payment to 29 mechanical craftsmen at Irish Fertilizer Industries Limited. The recommendation was signed on 9 August 1989. The unions sought a payment similar to the £2,600 given to electricians and junior technicians after management positions were removed in another section. The company said the supervisory grade remained in the mechanical section. The Court found that the earlier payment related directly to the elimination of that grade in the group that received it, and did not recommend concession of the unions' claim.
