In 1989, the Labour Court recommended that nurses at St. Joseph's Psychiatric Hospital, Limerick and Unit 5 B. Dooradoyle undertake integrated assignments when requested, under protest if necessary, and use management's disputes procedure for grievances. The recommendation was signed on 7 June 1989. The Irish Transport and General Workers' Union and the Psychiatric Nurses Association cited nurses' legal, moral and professional reservations and criticised management's approach. The Mid-Western Health Board argued staff should be assigned according to patient needs and individual skills. It said 24 nurses had refused assignments to six identified posts.
