Labour Court rejects Transport Salaried Staffs' Association pay claim

In 1989, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding Transport Salaried Staffs' Association's claim for adjusted rates of pay for 19 clerical staff appointed through open competition. The recommendation was signed on 18 May 1989. The Court said the workers had been appointed through open competition rather than promoted in the usual sense and had to accept the company's pay and conditions. The association argued that successful internal applicants could face reduced pay and sought salary adjustments. Coras Iompair Eireann said applicants knew the salary terms before accepting, and argued that placing internal applicants higher on the scale could disadvantage external candidates.
