The Labour Court recommended that Telemecanique (Ireland) Limited pay the stand-in allowance for two disputed cases in which supervisors were absent on maternity leave. It signed the recommendation on 7 April 1989. The Irish Transport And General Workers' Union said an agreement covered the absences, while the company denied making that commitment and argued that substitutes needed full supervisory authority. The Court found there had been a genuine misunderstanding about what was agreed and recommended that the parties clarify arrangements for appointing substitute supervisors.
