The Labour Court did not recommend conceding the unions’ full claim for lay-off support for temporary workers at H.B. Ice Cream Limited’s Rathfarnham plant. It recommended that the company make £2,500 available for distribution among the claimants as a goodwill gesture. The recommendation was signed on 6 March 1989. The Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union and the Federated Workers Union of Ireland sought support for 49 temporary workers after an 11-week plant closure. The company had extended its subsidy to 11 senior temporary workers, saying it did so on the understanding that no others were involved. The Court said it was unclear whether the union had guaranteed it would not pursue the wider claim.
