Labour Court rejects unions’ 5% bonus claim at Premier Periclase

By Niamh Kearney

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union and Amalgamated Transport and General Workers’ Union’s claim for an annual bonus of 5% of gross earnings for about 120 workers at Premier Periclase Limited. The recommendation was signed on 12 December 1988. The unions argued that switching to natural gas would save the company money and could reduce earnings for some dockers and truck drivers. The company said the change would reduce demands on staff, truck drivers would be redeployed, and any future loss-of-earnings claim could be considered individually. The Court said possible losses should be addressed when they arose and could be quantified; they did not justify an overall increase for the workforce.
