In 1988, the Labour Court did not recommend that Gateaux Limited pay lost wages and overtime to a worker who left the factory without permission after a dispute over heat from an overhead heater. The recommendation was signed on 19 September 1988. The Bakery and Food Workers’ Amalgamated Union sought payment for the time she was away, saying management had not resolved the excessive heat problem. Gateaux said she left the plant during production hours in protest. The Court noted that she had been paid while in the canteen and said it would have recommended payment if she had remained available for work.
