The Labour Court recommended changes to employment conditions in the Contract Cleaning Industry in a recommendation signed on 25 August 1988. The dispute followed negotiations between the Contract Cleaning Industry and the Federated Workers' Union of Ireland and Irish Transport and General Workers' Union.
The Court recommended written employment terms, minimum notice regardless of hours worked, reasonable notice of redundancies and a 1.6 multiple of statutory redundancy entitlement as a desirable standard. It recommended equal maternity leave and return rights regardless of hours, but not employer-paid maternity leave. It also recommended negotiating sick pay and pension schemes, disclosing contract-ending dates, refunding the £16 cancer-screening cost on receipt, and including regular Sunday work in holiday pay. It did not recommend guaranteed continuity at a site or extra holidays, and called for a dispute procedure. The unions sought stronger protections and benefits; the employer side cited costs and competitive tendering.
