In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union, represented by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, take up the Office Of Public Works' offer to negotiate compensation for two redeployed workers who lost pay differentials. The recommendation was signed on 17 August 1988. The workers had transferred from the Furniture Branch in Rialto to other locations after budgetary cut-backs. The Office Of Public Works said the differentials were tied to duties they no longer performed and offered to seek approval for reasonable compensation. The Court cited the need to avoid compulsory redundancies.
