The Labour Court recommended that Cadbury Ireland PLC make a further effort to place one or both of two B Block laboratory technicians in the main laboratory. If that proved impossible, it recommended offering them voluntary redundancy. The recommendation was signed on 12 August 1988. The Irish Transport and General Workers' Union and the Federated Workers' Union of Ireland sought to keep the workers in the main laboratory after the B Block laboratory closed. Cadbury Ireland PLC said the two laboratories belonged to separate employment groups with different duties and agreements. The Court agreed with an arbitrator that the technicians’ duties were moving to production lines and that their jobs were effectively being made redundant. It recommended trying to reorganise tasks so one or both could do work within their competence in the main laboratory before offering voluntary redundancy.
