In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that Wexford Corporation increase an assistant town foreman’s travel allowance to £750 from 1 July. The recommendation, on a claim by the Irish Transport And General Workers Union, was signed on 28 July 1988. The union said the worker’s fixed annual allowance of £627 did not cover the costs of using his own car for work. Wexford Corporation argued that his mileage log included journeys outside his normal duties and duplicated trips that could be reduced with better planning. The Court recommended the increase after considering submissions from both parties.
