In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that Barclay's Bank PLC recognise Manufacturing Science Finance's right to represent employees who were union members. The recommendation was signed on 24 June 1988. The union sought negotiation rights after telling the bank it had taken staff into membership. The bank requested the members' names; the union declined, and no meeting took place. The bank argued that around 15 staff had applied to join among its 68 Dublin employees and that existing procedures covered staff interests. The Court recommended recognition of the union's right to represent its members.
