In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that four disputed appointments at Murphy Brewery Ireland Limited proceed as the company envisaged. The recommendation was signed on 16 June 1988. The dispute with the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union concerned promotions to Utility Operator, Assistant Masher and Draft Beer Service positions. The union argued that senior applicants had been passed over and seniority given too little weight. Management said it had acted under the previous promotions clause and that seniority was considered but was not the overriding factor. The Court accepted there was a workforce perception that seniority had not received sufficient weighting and recommended implementing three provisions from the union submission to help avoid similar disagreements.
