The Labour Court recommended that Ryanair recognise the Federated Workers' Union Of Ireland on behalf of its members and negotiate an agreement governing relations between them. The recommendation was signed on 20 May 1988.
The union sought negotiating and representation procedures and a review of working conditions for 17 permanent inflight crew at Dublin Airport. Its request covered working hours, rest periods, rostering and annual leave. The union said the crew's irregular work patterns made agreed basic conditions important.
Ryanair had said employees could address representation and working conditions directly with management, and it declined an invitation to attend the Labour Court hearing. The union said it had prioritised working conditions over pay in its request.
The Labour Court recommended that Ryanair recognise the union on behalf of its members and negotiate a procedural agreement to regulate relations between them.
