In 1988, the Labour Court upheld a recommendation that the Eastern Health Board provide £2,082.72 for each of two boilermen redeployed after automation at Cherry Orchard Hospital. The decision was signed on 23 May 1988. The Federated Workers' Union of Ireland and Irish Transport and General Workers' Union appealed alongside the Board. The unions sought compensation for lost shift allowances and premium earnings after the workers moved to maintenance posts. The Board said it had retained their jobs and existing pay, and had continued shift allowances and premium payments while the claim was pending. The Court considered the recommendation fair, noting that the Board had sustained the workers' earnings from mid-October 1987 to the decision. Both appeals were rejected, leaving the Rights Commissioner's recommendation in place.
