In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that Irish Shell Limited delay planned compulsory redundancies for two months to give more workers time to opt for voluntary terms. The recommendation was signed on 31 March 1988. The dispute with the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union also concerned contracting out work. The Court said it could not recommend restricting the company’s ability to make compulsory redundancies. It recommended that employees offered contracts accept them if they considered the terms beneficial.
