In 1987, the Labour Court recommended a 4.5% pay increase for 12 months from 1 June for 72 workers at Irish Ale Breweries Limited's Ballyfermot depot. It also recommended that the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union and the Federated Workers' Union of Ireland negotiate over the company's cost-reduction plans, with no cost-increasing claims during the agreement. The recommendation was signed on 10 December 1987. The unions had sought a 12% increase, an increase to the service-pay scale and an extra day's annual leave. Irish Ale Breweries Limited cited declining depot business and the need to reduce costs. The Court recommended that negotiations on further cost-reduction plans conclude by 31 January 1988.
