In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that a technician in University College Dublin's diagnostic laboratories should not be made compulsorily redundant. The recommendation was signed on 21 December 1987. T.A.S.S. opposed the proposed redundancy, saying the technician understood the post to be permanent and had taken a salary cut to accept it. The College said falling laboratory activity meant there was not enough work to retain him and argued that budget cuts left no scope for redeployment. The Court had regard to an earlier recommendation, the technician's appointment terms and the Plan for National Recovery, and recommended that clause 2 of the productivity agreement apply.
