In 1987, the Labour Court recommended a 4% pay increase for about 400 general workers at Irish Glass Bottle Limited, following a wage claim by the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union. The recommendation was signed on 2 November 1987. The increase was to take effect from 1 August 1987, with the agreement ending on 31 October 1988. The union had sought an 8% increase under the 27th wage round. Irish Glass Bottle had argued that it wanted a rationalisation programme agreed and implemented before discussing a wage deal. It also cited falling sales of glass containers, import competition and pressure to reduce prices. The Court set out its recommendation after considering both sides' submissions.
