In 1987, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Irish Sugar plc drivers' claim for compensation for alleged loss of status. The recommendation was signed on 9 July 1987. The Irish Transport and General Workers' Union sought £1,000 for each of seven drivers, saying their driving duties had declined and they had lost shift work and subsistence allowance. The company said changing operations had reduced the need for drivers and that available driving work had been allocated reasonably. The Court said the company had acted reasonably in its pay arrangements and allocation of available driving duties.
