In 1987, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Association of Scientific Technical and Managerial Staff’s claim against Irish National Insurance for an out-of-line increase and a shorter salary scale. It recommended that the 16 engineer surveyors accept the company’s offer. The recommendation was signed on 29 May 1987. The union sought 11.5% from 1 March 1986 and 6% from 1 January 1987, along with the removal of three points from the salary scale. Most of the company’s other staff had accepted its phased 25th-round settlement. Irish National Insurance said its offer followed a comparability study and its payments had to reflect what it could afford. The Court said the salary discrepancy largely arose from differences in the length of the 25th-round agreements.
