Labour Court says NYPRO overtime should be voluntary

The Labour Court recommended that NYPRO LIMITED and the Federated Workers' Union of Ireland interpret their site agreement as providing for voluntary overtime. The recommendation was signed on 22 December 1986. The dispute followed NYPRO's request for workers to be available every second weekend. After a worker objected, the company suspended him and a work stoppage followed. NYPRO argued that weekend shifts were reasonable overtime; the union said the company was imposing conditions not agreed in the site agreement. The Court said the agreement's overtime provision was voluntary, should not continue indefinitely and should not be unreasonably refused.
