WRC recommends €900 for unfairly dismissed school canteen worker

The WRC recommended €900 compensation for a worker unfairly dismissed from a school canteen job. In a recommendation dated 15 October 2025, adjudication officer Elizabeth Spelman found the worker was dismissed without notice and without fair procedures. The worker said she expected to return after the summer break and was surprised by an August 2024 message saying her employment had ended in June. The employer said her fixed-term employment ended with the school year in May. Spelman preferred the worker’s account, which a colleague supported. The employer had provided no written contract and had not raised performance concerns during her employment.
