WRC does not uphold local authority worker’s challenge to demotion

By Aoife Loughran

Historic decision · Decision date:

Place: no local area assigned from the source.

The WRC did not uphold A Local Authority Worker’s challenge to his demotion after a workplace bullying investigation. The recommendation was dated 24 June 2026. The worker argued that demotion was excessive and that the employer had failed to address workplace conflict and provide adequate training. The local authority said it had considered alternative sanctions and that demotion was justified by the misconduct findings. The officer accepted evidence that other sanctions had been considered and found no basis to disturb the workplace process. The worker had accepted that his disciplinary hearing was fair, and the officer found no relevant flaw in the decision-making. The WRC made no further recommendation.
