WRC recommends fresh appeal in university worker’s job grading dispute

The WRC recommended that a university worker be allowed to make a fresh appeal of her job grading, including information she received only after her previous appeal failed. The recommendation was dated 28 October 2025.

The worker said her former administration role was later advertised at a higher grade despite having less responsibility. She appealed the original grading in 2023, but said information she needed was provided four days after she was told the appeal had failed. The university said she had been given an opportunity to appeal and had exhausted its internal review process.

The adjudication officer said the dispute concerned one individual and was not collective. The officer said the WRC could not simply regrade a role where a review mechanism existed, but found it fair to reconsider the appeal now that the requested information had been provided. The recommendation was for a fresh appeal to be considered by the external consultancy engaged for the grading exercise.
