WRC recommends hospital review estates manager’s grade and duties

The WRC recommended that a hospital review an estates manager’s grading, duties, extra hours and pensionable years after a long-running dispute over his role. The recommendation was dated 23 August 2023.

The worker said his responsibilities had grown beyond his grade VIII role and sought alignment with the technical services officer grade, overtime and emergency call-out pay, additional pensionable years and an end to what he described as victimisation. The hospital said the technical services grade was unsuitable, spending was constrained and grade VIII managers were not paid overtime.

The WRC recommended that the HR director seek approval to move him to the top point of the general manager grade and define the estates manager’s responsibilities. It also recommended time off in lieu for extra hours and emergency attendance, examination of his request for additional pensionable years, and an independent mediator agreed by both sides to address communication problems.
