The Labour Court determined that 29 female factory workers at An Bord Telecom Eireann were entitled to equal remuneration with Mr Denis Dunne from 3 June 1979. The determination was signed on 15 December 1988. The Irish Women Workers Branch and the Federated Workers Union of Ireland appealed an Equality Officer recommendation on the workers’ claim under the Anti-Discrimination (Pay) Act, 1974. The Court found that the women’s pay was linked to a predominantly female grade in outside employment, while Mr Dunne’s pay was based on predominantly male Civil Service grades. It held that this difference did not amount to grounds other than sex.
