WRC orders large retail store to pay €25,000 over disability accommodation failure

The WRC ordered a large retail store to pay a worker €25,000 and review its disability accommodation policies after finding it failed to properly assess his needs. The decision was dated 10 July 2026.

The worker said recommended supports, including written instructions, were not provided and that he was demoted after his diagnosis. The store said it provided fixed shifts and practical help, and paid sick leave under its scheme. The officer upheld the reasonable accommodation complaint, finding there had been no proper assessment or sufficient enquiries about outside support. The demotion complaint was out of time and not well founded; harassment and wages complaints were also not well founded. The wages complaint failed because sick pay entitlement was set by the employment terms.
