WRC says it cannot hear retirement-age dismissal complaint

The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) found it had no jurisdiction to hear Liam Heffernan’s unfair dismissal complaint against Obelisk Communications Limited. The decision was dated 22 April 2026. Heffernan said he was unfairly dismissed when he reached 65 and that a three-month extension was too short; he had hoped to stay for two years. The company said 65 was its normal retirement age and that it offered the extension to allow a handover. The WRC found the normal retirement age was 65 and applied the statutory exclusion, so it did not decide the substance of the dismissal complaint.
