The WRC recommended that an employer pay an employee €1,000 as a goodwill gesture after finding its mandatory retirement policy was justified. The recommendation was dated 24 October 2025. The registered psychiatric nurse had asked to continue working beyond age 66. The employer said the retirement age supported safety, workforce planning and succession planning. The adjudicator accepted those reasons and found the employee knew of the retirement age by 2017 or early 2018. The recommendation recognised the employee’s upset that the employer had not acknowledged her years of service, while allowing it to require staff to retire at 66.
