WRC rejects sexual-orientation discrimination complaint over gym membership

The Workplace Relations Commission rejected Paddy Mahon’s complaint that New Ross Sport & Leisure Limited discriminated against him because of his sexual orientation by ending his gym membership. Adjudication officer Seamus Clinton dated the decision 28 January 2025. Mahon said the termination was not explained and he was not formally told he could return. The company said he could take an individual membership, but not a buddy membership with his partner. The adjudicator found the company had been remiss in not contacting Mahon, but found no evidence this was related to his sexual orientation and considered administrative oversight more likely.
