Keng Hong Leong won five of eight complaints against Ultra Leisure Limited, and the Workplace Relations Commission awarded him compensation for breaches involving public holidays, weekly rest, Sunday work, breaks and written employment terms.

The decision, dated 7 August 2024, concerned Leong’s work as a casino cashier. He said his contract lacked clear terms and he worked Sundays without clear additional compensation. The company argued his salary accounted for Sunday work and that he could take breaks during shifts.

The officer found Leong’s breaks were not uninterrupted because he remained responsible to customers. The company was ordered to pay €300 for that breach and keep statutory records. The WRC also ordered it to incorporate public-holiday and Sunday-work provisions in employment contracts and to comply with weekly-rest requirements.

The other upheld complaints concerned public holidays, weekly rest and written core terms, for which the WRC awarded €1,000, €750 and €2,240 respectively. Three complaints were not well founded: annual leave, excessive night hours and race discrimination.
