WRC recommends €500 voucher after monthly pay change dispute

The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) recommended that a facilities services company pay a worker a €500 voucher after changing his pay from fortnightly to monthly and delaying its investigation of his grievance. The recommendation was dated 23 February 2023. The worker argued that weekly pay was an express contract term and that the employer delayed unreasonably in handling his grievance. The company said monthly pay would streamline payroll, that it had consulted staff and extended the transition date, and that pandemic pressures contributed to delays. The adjudication officer said the move was significant for workers and that the delay compounded the worker’s sense that the change had been imposed unilaterally. The dispute was shared by nine employees, with a separate recommendation issued for each.
