The Workplace Relations Commission found the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) unfairly dismissed Sean Dillon and ordered it to pay him €30,000. The decision was dated 3 April 2023.

Dillon worked as Lifesaving Manager Ireland from 2018. The RNLI did not attend the hearing or provide evidence. Dillon said a proposed Head of Region Ireland role was almost identical to his position.

The WRC found delays in answering questions made the redundancy consultation unfair and unreasonable. It also found there was no meaningful engagement with Dillon about suitable alternative roles, beyond sending him a generic list of vacancies.

The WRC found the redundancy was not for reasons unrelated to Dillon and ruled that his dismissal was unfair. It ordered €30,000 in compensation for financial loss attributable to the dismissal.
