The Workplace Relations Commission found KOA Kitchen of Asia Restaurant engaged in prohibited conduct by refusing Sophia Brennan entry with her guide dog, and ordered €2,000 compensation. The incident happened at the restaurant on Main Street in Malahide on 4 March 2022.

In a decision dated 12 June 2023, the WRC found Brennan had established a prima facie case of discrimination and the restaurant had not rebutted it. The manager said the dog would not be allowed in, citing hygiene. The restaurant later apologised and promised staff training.

The restaurant had said staff members had asthma and children might be frightened of a dog, but Brennan disputed that these explanations were given at the time. The WRC also directed the restaurant to learn its obligations under Equal Status legislation and make staff aware of the issues it covers.
