The WRC found that a child’s Equal Status complaint against a civil registration service was not well founded. The decision was dated 31 August 2023.
The child’s parents brought the complaint on her behalf after staff asked them to wear masks while registering her birth. They objected to being asked for details of a disability that prevented them from wearing masks. The service said the family received the requested documents, with the father served outside in his car.
The adjudicator found that the parents had not told staff that a disability prevented them from wearing masks. Staff provided forms outside and later issued the relevant documentation. The officer found no stateable case of discrimination on the facts.
