WRC declines lecturer’s promotion dispute but recommends regular process reviews

By Gráinne Nolan

Historic decision · Decision date:

Place: no local area assigned from the source.

The WRC did not uphold a lecturer’s dispute over his bid for promotion to professor or his request to resubmit under the older process. It recommended regular reviews of the promotion process. Adjudication Officer Louise Boyle dated the recommendation 10 March 2023. The worker said the assessment was incomplete and procedurally flawed, including because it covered six rather than seven areas and undervalued his qualifications and contributions. The university said he could apply under its newer process, which had been agreed with the unions. The WRC found nothing to suggest the university had departed from the process in place when he applied. It recommended regular reviews to give suitably qualified candidates a fair and transparent opportunity, taking account of their subject areas.
