A meat factory wins discrimination and victimisation case

By Orla Quinn

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The WRC found for a meat factory after a worker’s race and religious discrimination and victimisation complaints failed. The decision, dated 17 May 2017, concerned allegations about working conditions, including work allocation, hours, breaks and religious accommodation. The adjudication officer found the worker had not established discrimination in his conditions of employment. The factory’s training records applied to workers regardless of race or religion, and the officer accepted its evidence that hours, pay, breaks and religious accommodation were handled without less favourable treatment. The victimisation complaint also failed: proceedings brought by a colleague over a personal injury did not count as a protected act under the Employment Equality Acts. A duplicate complaint was withdrawn.
