In 1998, the Labour Court increased a Rights Commissioner’s recommended settlement from £1,000 to £5,000 after the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union appealed on behalf of a Shannon Development worker. The decision was dated 27 April 1998. The dispute concerned whether a £2,000 annual allowance should count towards the worker’s pension. Shannon Development said the allowance was not pensionable and that it withdrew an offer to include it in basic pay. The Court supported the Rights Commissioner’s findings about the company’s offer and its handling of the issue, but increased the recommended lump-sum payment to £5,000 and amended the recommendation accordingly.
