In 1996, the Labour Court upheld Artane/Beaumont Recreation Centre’s appeal against a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation about a part-time bar worker’s reduced hours. The Court’s decision was signed on 3 April 1996. Mandate argued that her hours were cut while male staff’s hours remained unchanged, that the licensed trade’s pro-rata agreement was breached, and that new staff were hired at her expense. The Centre said her hours fell after full-time staff returned from illness and that staffing levels depended on business needs. The recommendation offered either restoring her hours with £800 compensation or continuing three shifts a week with £3,600 compensation. The Labour Court found the Centre’s appeal well founded and upheld it, displacing both alternatives.
