In 1994, the Labour Court left standing a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation on the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s appeal in a dispute with Coopers Limited over redundant van assistants and help for drivers. The decision was signed on 27 April 1994. The union argued that drivers often needed assistance and should be compensated for extra work. Coopers Limited said drivers could operate the vans without assistants and help was provided when required. The Court noted that the two dismissed assistants had priority for any future van-assistant vacancies and could later apply for warehouse jobs. The recommendation called for the agreed arrangements to continue through 31 December 1994, followed by review and monitoring of assistance requests.
