In 1993, the Labour Court reduced two Hartman (Ireland) Limited workers’ unpaid suspensions from one day to half a day after an appeal by the Service Industrial Professional Technical Union. The decision was dated 24 November 1993. The workers were suspended after a dispute over removing a fifth person from an injection moulding shift. The Court found no established practice of working under protest while a disputed instruction was resolved. It also noted that the production manager had acknowledged a misunderstanding. The Court said those points did not excuse the workers’ actions, but amended the Rights Commissioner’s recommendation to reduce the penalty to half a day’s unpaid suspension.
