Labour Court upholds roster talks recommendation on Bus Eireann appeal

In 1993, the Labour Court upheld a recommendation for local talks about a Bus Eireann assistant foreman's Saturday rest day. The Court rejected the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association's appeal in a decision dated 4 October. The recommendation called for the parties to pursue discussions toward a more socially equitable roster by agreement.

The Association said roster changes left the foreman supervising Saturday staff paid overtime while he received his normal rate. Bus Eireann argued that Saturday work formed part of his Tuesday-to-Saturday week and that a foreman was needed at Ballina Garage on Saturdays. It estimated that a Saturday rest day would cost £5,000 a year. The Court found the recommendation was not unfair in the circumstances.
