In 1993, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner recommendation of £100 for each of three sandwich makers who lost work at Curragh Racecourse meetings. SERVICES INDUSTRIAL PROFESSIONAL TECHNICAL UNION appealed the recommendation, arguing that the workers had lost employment and earnings under changed arrangements. CHK Limited T/A Masterchefs said a new production system meant casual sandwich makers were no longer required.
The Labour Court noted that the company’s current arrangements did not require casual sandwich makers, but that any future requirement would be handled under the company-union agreement. It found no grounds to alter the recommendation and rejected the union’s appeal. The decision was dated 2 September 1993.
