In 1986, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation that Aer Lingus pay five postal sorters £500 each for lost overtime. The Court’s decision was signed on 9 December 1986. The Irish Transport And General Workers Union appealed, arguing that regular overtime had formed part of the workers’ earnings for more than 10 years and that the recommended compensation was inadequate. Aer Lingus said the workers’ losses varied and that the change was largely outside its control. The Labour Court left the recommendation in place.
