William McAteer guilty of conspiracy to defraud public

By Fionn Kelly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

William McAteer was found guilty of conspiring to defraud the public, reported on 2 June 2016. The offence concerned Anglo Irish Bank in 2008, and the report describes McAteer as a former finance director who had responsibility for risk as well as finance. The report says he was aware of the €7.2bn Irish Life & Permanent deal but denied knowing its mechanics or intending to create a false impression of the bank’s health. His lawyers argued that an honest belief the transactions were properly accounted for was inconsistent with dishonesty or conspiracy to defraud.
