An unnamed Wicklow man was sentenced to 21 years in prison, with the final seven years suspended, for rape and sexual assault at the Central Criminal Court, reported on 3 June 2016. The offences against two step-sons occurred at his Wicklow home between 1993 and 2003.

He pleaded guilty to 165 counts involving one boy and 40 similar offences against his brother. The court heard that he also arranged for a friend to sexually abuse one boy and sometimes made the brothers commit incest with each other.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt said the abuse had a profound and permanent effect on both victims. Anonymity orders protecting the victims remained in place.
